Roger Vernon Schultz, 88 years old, passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 at his home in Blossburg surrounded by family. Although he had been in failing health for several years, it was a fall at home on Monday, January 18 that hospitalized him. He was returned to his home on Hospice Friday afternoon only to pass away 3 hours later.
Roger was born December 18, 1932 at the Blossburg Hospital in Blossburg, PA. to Clarence and Grace Snyder Schultz.
On September 10, 1955, Roger married Joyce Marlene Hemenway who survives him at home.
Roger was a paratrooper in the United States Army from 1954-1956. He often recounted his stories of jumping from a “perfectly good airplane” onto the Alaskan tundra in Winter.
Roger lived a very full and active life. He was a master at carpentry; his talent and attention to detail were present in each home he built or remodeled. He and Joyce built their first home, a three bedroom ranch in Blossburg. This home had a one of a kind, beautifully hand crafted knotty pine kitchen. This became a very full and active house once their seven children arrived.
Roger had several hobbies through the years. In their early married life he could be seen on the school ground flying the model airplanes he built. Roger also tied his own flies for another love of his life, fly fishing. This hobby developed in the local creeks as a very young man and followed through his life until he could no longer hold a fish pole. Another passion of his was cars. He was exceedingly proud of his first car, a “34 Ford Coupe. After that many Jaguars Imperials, Continentals, Cadillacs and even a couple Limos graced this town. He started drag racing (legally) in 1969 having lots of fun and some success. In the 1990s his dream became a reality as he finally did 10.7 seconds in the quarter mile at Beaver Springs Dragway in his 1968 Plymouth GTX. s Most of the kids remember meatloaf sandwiches, cheater beans and hickory nut bread.
Roger was a family man of 7 children and loved by 5 generations. He is survived by his children, Robert Schultz of Mansfield, Rhonda (Rick) Mosher of Tioga, Roxanne (Mark) Malone of Canton, Ryan (Karen) Schultz of Blossburg, Rebecca Schultz of Blossburg, Rex Schultz (Kim Purdy) of Spencer, NY, Rosalie (John) Heath of Gillette, PA.
