Myron Mayer, 99, passed away on 17 February 2015 at Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY where he had lived since November 2013. Myron was born on June 8, 1915, in Milwaukee, WI, son of Peter Wentzel Mayer and Nellie Hein Mayer. On Sept 13, 1941, he married Kundy Boroch, who passed away in August 1999. Music was always a driving force in Myron’s life and he attributed his love of music to his father. When a band director handed Myron a flute and a fingering chart and said he could be in the band if he learned how to play it, it was his father who taught him how to play. Myron then played in school bands until he graduated from high school. In 1935 Myron enlisted in the U.S. Army. His first posting was at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, where he was the first flutist in the field band. Then in 1939 he was able to transfer to the United States Military Band at West Point, where he was the principle flutist. He also composed and arranged music for the Band and installed their recording system. In those years the band made many trips to Hyde Park to play for the Roosevelts. He also was able to accompany many celebrities such as Harpo Marx, Ethel Merman, Lily Pons and Percy Granger.
In 1955 Myron retired from the Army and thought he would pursue a career in television and radio repair. But after a few years, the pull of music was at him again and he became the director of the North Penn High School band. During his tenure there the band grew from a small group of about 20 students to a concert/marching band of over 60 and a junior band of about 30. He left the school in 1964, but he continued to give private lessons for many years. Myron’s second passion was his grandchildren. He was always on hand to help them and he especially enjoyed giving them music lessons. Each of the granddaughters played a different instrument and when relatives would gather, they would perform music that Myron had arranged for them. In June 200, Myron moved to Elmira, NY, to live with his daughter Evelyn and her husband Bill Stachowski. He lived there until his move to Bethany. Myron is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law: Evelyn Stachowski of Elmira, NY, and Joanne and Allen Schweinsberg of Lewisburg, PA; six grandchildren: Mrs. John (Cynthia) Decker, Mrs. Michael (Theresa) Carlson, Mrs. Sean (Cheryl) Cassidy, Mrs. Thomas (Karen) Webb, Dr. Jason Schweinsberg and Dr. Aaron Schweinsberg; and seven great-grandsons. Myron was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Kundy Boroch, son-in-law Francis (Bill) Stachowski, 3 half-siblings, Edgar Mayer, Alexander Mayer and Olive Mayer Rhein, and one sister, Evelyn Patricia Mayer Rogman all from Wisconsin.
