Garry lee Smith, retired physical education teacher, died suddenly at his home in Parkville, MD on March 20, 2014. Garry was born October 12, 1949 in Blossburg, and was the son of the late Raymond and Joyce (Llewellyn) Smith. He graduated from North Penn High School in Blossburg and from Lock Haven University, Lock Haven. He obtained his Master’s Degree from Western Maryland College in 1977.
Garry was employed by the Baltimore County Public School System for 35 years as an Elementary Physical Education Teacher, and as an Instructional Specialist. He was recognized as the State of Maryland Physical Education Teacher of the Year and the AAHPERD Eastern District Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Garry loved teaching elementary physical education and touched the lives of many children in the Baltimore County Public Schools.
Garry is survived by his beloved partner of 15 years Howard A. Goldstein. In addition, he is survived by three brothers; Larry Smith of Blossburg, Terry Smith of Harrisburg, and Jeff Smith of Jordon, NY. Garry was a beloved uncle of five nieces and nephews
Friends will be received at the Freeberg Funeral Home, Blossburg, Saturday April 12, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Memorial services will follow at 11a.m., with Rev. Michele Somerville officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the Frist United Methodist Church, Blossburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in his name.
