She grew up in Rowayton, Connecticut, and Harmony Township, New Jersey, with her sisters Jane Hertz and Ruth (William) Bartron. She graduated from Phillipsburg (NJ) High School and attended Douglass College (NJ).

Carol was beloved by many as she drove school bus and delivered mail in New Jersey; she continued to deliver mail after the family moved their dairy farm to Covington, Pennsylvania, in 1980. She retired as a Rural Mail carrier in 2010 after 35 years, which included being a member of the Rural Carriers Association. She was proud to be inducted into the One Million Mile Club, for attaining a million miles or 30 years of safe driving without a preventable incident.
She was also an active member of the State Road Cemetery Board, Tioga County Cooperative Extension, Tioga County Dairy Princess Committee, and part of the Dairylea Milk Cooperative (for more than 50 years). Visiting and spending time with family, reading, bowling, watching football, and playing the piano were among her passions.
