Welcome to the memorial page for

Cheryl Linda Oman

March 14, 1947 ~ January 8, 2018 (age 70) 70 Years Old

Cheryl Linda Oman, aged 70, died peacefully on January 8, 2018 at 5:02 am at home in Nelson, PA, after a long battle with Pict’s disease (FTD dementia).  Cheryl was born March 14, 1947 in Allentown, PA, the only daughter of Forrest and LaMae Harwick of Coopersburg, PA.

As a nursing student, she met James Oman on a blind date on July 3, 1966. He won her over with his charming personality and conversations of space travel, strawberries, and Christmas trees - back when he had hair (!).  He proposed several months later, she said yes, and they married on August 24, 1968.  Their first home was in Bloomsburg, PA while Jim completed his BS in Education.  They moved to Hornby, NY after Jim accepted a position at Corning West High School in 1969.  In 1970, they settled in Nelson, PA, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Cheryl enjoyed a successful nursing career with positions at local hospitals, home health care, and finally retiring from Soldiers And Sailors Memorial Hospital in Wellsboro, PA where she was a utilization review coordinator.  She also volunteered her time as a fire fighter and EMT with her husband in Nelson.

She was Mom to two daughters  (Jennifer 1971 and Jill 1974).  She was “Mamaw” to Benjamin and Sarah Grace (children of Jennifer and Stephen Spencer) and Mia (furbaby to Jill).

Cheryl was a crafty gal, always into the latest and greatest – long before Pinterest.  She was a true 70’s woman, doing macramé, pottery, and matching seersucker outfits for her girls and herself.  In the 80’s she rocked cross-stitch, crocheted afghans, and tons of Christmas tree ornaments.  The 1990’s and 2000’s were dedicated to her mad sewing skills and showing off her love of her family.  Elaborate Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, decorative flags, quilts, and knitting projects.

In 2011, after several years of searching for answers to memory, speech, and coordination issues, the Lou Rovu Center for Brain Health at Cleveland Clinic diagnosed her with Pict’s disease.

She is survived by her husband, James Oman, daughters Jennifer Spencer and Jill Oman.  Her grandchildren Benjamin and Sarah Grace Spencer.  Her mother LaMae Harwick.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, January 15th at Tuscarora Baptist Church, 441 Cook Road, Addison, NY  14801.  Friends received from 11 am  - 1 pm.  Memorial is at 1 pm with a reception to follow.
